John Pointer: Austin Musician & Performer

Who is John Pointer?

John Pointer is a multi-instrumentalist, actor, arranger, composer, producer, and performer. He has been a full-time musician in Austin, TX since 1991, when he moved there from Ann Arbor, MI to attend the University of Texas.

According to his parents, John could sing before he could speak, mimicking the melodies of the lullabies he heard. By the age of 5, he was studying piano, at age 6 he started cello, percussion at age 8, guitar at age 11, bass at age 13, and later banjo and mandolin. He studied cello performance and composition and graduated from UT in 1997 with a degree in music and lacking only two courses for a second degree in Italian.

John has worked with innumerable artists, including:

  • Ozomatli
  • Schrodinger’s Cat
  • Trio Los Vigilantes
  • Woodwork
  • BoomBox ATX
  • Sixpence None the Richer
  • Bob Schneider
  • Monte Montgomery
  • Patrice Pike

John played "Judas" in Zach Scott Theater’s award-winning production of "Jesus Christ Superstar." He has also done numerous nationally televised commercials as a human beatbox and is an advisory board member of the Austin Music Foundation and Save Austin Music.

Patronism

He has just created Patronism.com, the simplest form of music support yet. It boils everything down to the essentials: compelling artists, connected patrons, and a web conduit to allow those patrons to support the artists they resonate with. It solves the file sharing problem; fans can distribute the music that the patrons help pay for collectively, so a musician with sufficient support can simply focus on making more music to share.
